Compare Text and Documents Online, Line by Line

Paste two versions or drop two files, and LineDiff shows exactly what was added, removed, and changed — with AI that explains why those changes matter.

Manual document review is where mistakes happen. A single altered number in a financial statement, a reversed clause in a contract, or a silently changed default in a config file can travel a long way before anyone notices. LineDiff removes that risk by computing a precise difference between two versions and presenting it in a view built for reading, not just for machines. Comparison runs in a Web Worker inside your browser, so even multi-thousand-line documents stay responsive, and your text never has to leave your device to produce a result.

How It Works

Three steps, no account required for your first comparison.

  1. 1

    Add your two versions

Paste text directly into the two panels, drag and drop files, or import from Google Docs and Microsoft Word through the official add-ins. LineDiff parses PDF, Word, Excel, CSV, JSON, YAML, XML, Markdown, HTML, and plain text, extracting readable content before comparison begins.

  2. 2

    Tune the comparison

Choose whether to ignore whitespace, letter case, or punctuation, and switch between line, word, and character granularity. These options matter: ignoring reformatting noise is the difference between a diff you can read and a wall of red and green.

  3. 3

    Read, explain, and share

Step through changes with keyboard navigation, merge individual lines, and ask the AI to summarise what changed in the language of your domain. Export the result as PDF, Excel, HTML, JSON, or a standard diff patch, or share a link with your team.

Built for Documents That Matter

A diff is only useful if you can act on it. These are the features that turn a list of changes into a decision.

Clear Text Comparison

Use the side-by-side view to easily identify differences between two texts simultaneously for a fast and clear visual comparison. Switch to line-by-line mode to closely examine specific changes and ensure no detail goes unnoticed.

Explain your Diff results with AI

Use AI to automatically explain your diff results with clear, human-readable summaries. Instantly understand not only what changed between versions, but also its semantic meaning, how it affects context, and why it matters across your documents, code, and text files.

Real-Time Team Collaboration on Comparison Results

Collaborate on comparison results in real time by securely sharing diffs, adding comments, and discussing changes directly on results. Review documents together, reduce misunderstandings, and speed up feedback across text, code, and files with shared context.

Add Comments and Collect Feedback on Diff Results

Add comments directly on each line of comparison to highlight issues, request revisions, and collect feedback in full context. LineDiff keeps all discussions tied to exact changes, making it easy to review updates, track decisions, and manage approvals across documents, code, and text files.

Privacy-First Encrypted Diff Comparison

Protect sensitive documents with privacy-first encrypted diff comparison. LineDiff uses advanced encryption to secure contracts, financial records, medical files, and internal data during upload, processing, and sharing, keeping your information protected throughout the entire workflow.

Multi-Format Document, File, and Text Comparison

Compare files across multiple formats including PDF, Word, Excel, and plain text within a single unified workflow. LineDiff makes it easy to analyze changes across diverse document types for legal, financial, publishing, and technical use cases without switching tools.

Export Diff Results as PDF, Excel or Word Files

Export your diff results as clean, well-formatted PDF, Excel, or Word files for documentation, reporting, and sharing. LineDiff makes it easy to create readable comparison outputs for presentations, stakeholder reviews, and client reporting without extra formatting work.

Smart Detection of Case, Accent, and Character-Level Changes

LineDiff detects subtle text variations including case changes, accents, diacritics, and character-level differences. This ensures precise comparison results for legal, financial, and technical workflows where even the smallest change can alter meaning.

Your Documents Stay Yours

Local-first by design, not as an afterthought.

Most online comparison tools upload your text to a server before they can show you anything. LineDiff works the other way around. The diff engine runs entirely in your browser, and comparisons are stored locally in IndexedDB, which means the tool keeps working offline and your content is never a prerequisite for a result. If you choose to sync across devices or collaborate with a team, you can enable end-to-end encryption: content is encrypted in your browser before it is sent, and the key travels in the share link rather than to our servers, so we cannot read what you compared. You can also stay entirely in local-only mode and never sync anything at all. For AI analysis, only the text you explicitly submit is sent for processing, and you can bring your own API key if your organisation requires it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is LineDiff free to use?
LineDiff offers a Free plan with unlimited classic diff comparisons, 10 exports/month (excluding PDF), 3 Google Docs imports/month, and 50 history items. For advanced features like PDF export, sharing, and AI credits, we offer Pro ($14.25/mo launch | $19/mo regular) and Team plans. AI credits included in paid plans never expire, and additional credit packs can be purchased anytime.
Is LineDiff safe to use?
Yes. LineDiff prioritizes your data security. For logged-in users, data syncs to the cloud (Firestore) with optional encryption—you choose encrypted (client-side encryption, zero-knowledge) or unencrypted storage per comparison. For guests (not logged in), data stays only in your browser (IndexedDB) and never leaves your device. We only store the minimum metadata needed for history, sharing, and AI usage tracking.
What is LineDiff?
LineDiff is an AI‑assisted diff workspace for professionals working with high‑stakes documents such as contracts, policies, financial reports and specifications. You can compare long texts and multi‑format documents, add line‑level comments, work securely across devices and, when needed, use AI‑powered semantic insights to understand not just what changed, but why it matters.
What export formats are available?
You can export in PDF, HTML, Excel and JSON formats, so you can create client‑ready reports, internal tracking sheets or machine‑readable outputs for automation.
Can LineDiff help with contract review and legal document comparison?
Yes. LineDiff is built for legal workflows. Upload two versions of any contract (Word, PDF, or text) and LineDiff highlights every changed word, clause, and sentence instantly. The AI Legal domain analysis identifies critical clause modifications — added obligations, removed protections, changed liability terms, and risk-flagged language — so attorneys can focus their review on the most significant changes. Zero-knowledge client-side encryption protects attorney-client privileged content: documents are encrypted in your browser before any data leaves your device, and LineDiff's server never sees unencrypted content.
How to use LineDiff?
Using LineDiff is simple: Upload or paste the two texts or files you want to compare, or import from formats like PDF, Word, Excel or Google Docs. LineDiff automatically highlights differences in side‑by‑side or line‑by‑line view. You can add comments, apply original/modified text with one click, export reports, and optionally run AI‑powered semantic analysis when you need deeper insight.
Can I add comments to my comparisons?
Yes! You can attach comments to any line, with author information and timestamps, making it easy to track decisions, rationale and questions for future reference.
How does AI-powered analysis and credit usage work?
AI-powered semantic diff is optional and credit-based. Pro users get 50 welcome credits (one-time), Team users get 150/user. Credits never expire. Cost depends on model (GPT-5 Nano=1, GPT-5 Mini=2, GPT-5/5.1=4 base credits) multiplied by text size (S=1x, M=2x, L=3x, XL=5x). Additional credit packs: Starter (25/$3), Plus (100/$10), Pro (500/$40). AI requires login, consent, and sufficient credits.
